Lofoten Island

History

Tørnholmen is an “one mile long” private island close to the very important  fishing village Stamsund.

Stamsund’s history as a fishing village is dated back to early 1600. In all years the village has been one of the most important fishing harbours in the arctic Norway.

The cod season from January-April is the peek. Fishermen and boats are coming from all over Norway to catch and deliver cod in Lofoten.

In 1852, Peter Møllers started to produce and sell Peter Møllers Medicine cod liver oil. His cod liver oil won a lot of gold medals for the unique and pure quality. The method needed a lot of fresh cod-liver and in 1867 Peter built a big cod liver oil factory at the island Tørnholmen in Stamsund.

Today Stamsund is a village with two main fish-production plants, several smaller fishing companies, homeport for one of the biggest fish trawler fleets in the country and about 1.100 inhabitants live here year around.

Tourists comes all year around. They like to walk on the cay, look at the old and famous fish houses and absorb the atmosphere of an authentic fish village.
